genre's growth and influence, events such as this set out to expand
upon our understandings of house. Headlining the Electrique Room is New
Yorker (and one-time Torontonian) Todd Sines, a producer who has long
merged house, techno and soul into skilled, sumptuous releases for
labels including Peacefrog, Planet E and Seventh City. Meanwhile,
Detroit producer and driving force behind Ya Digg Records Whodat brings
her new-school take on soulful house to the Housemusique Room. The
entire event will be broadcast live on www.netmusique.com.

Holger Zilske / Smash TV (live) @ Nocturne
Best Bet for May 15th, 2010
Holger Zilske a.k.a. Smash TV (live) @ Breakandenter
WITH
MARK THIBIDEAU (LIVE), DJS TALAL & ZOI, MARTIN FAZEKAS, VJ
WUSTENARCHITEKTEN. $15 BEFORE 11:30PM. SAT, MAY 15. NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN
W.
German techno master Holger Zilske, best known as half of Smash TV, has
long been associated with Ellen Allien's BPitch Control, having put out
more than 30 EPs and two Smash TV albums on the label as well as having
produced three of Allien's own albums. He began making music under his
birth name in 2006, recording a string of solo EPs and the gorgeous
2009 artist album, Holz, for Playhouse. Zilske's take on tech is
melodic, detailed and highly individual. Our own Mark Thibideau also
celebrates the recent release of his solo LP, Left Behind, with the
debut of his own live PA.
Arthur Oskan (live) @ Nocturne
Best Bet for April 23rd, 2010
http://www.eyeweekly.com/clubs/bestbets/article/88768
Arthur Oskan (live) @ Thought/Form
WITH DJS JAMIE KIDD, NOAH PRED, XI. FRI, APR 23.
NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $5 BEFORE MIDNIGHT, $10 AFTER.
For
the better part of the past decade, Toronto techno producer Arthur
Oskan has been steadily honing his craft, turning out quality releases
for labels including Beretta Music, Restructured and Cratesavers.
Recently, Oskan has found his music supported by the likes of Funk
D‘Void, Los Hermanos, Hernan Cattaneo and John Digweed. His fantastic
new Eggshells EP on Noah Pred's Thoughtless label can only
add to this acclaim, as Oskan has deftly melded classic
Detroit-inspired melodies with a very contemporary richness. Fellow
locals Jamie Kidd and XI, both of whom have turned in tight remixes of
Oskan's tunes, join in at this release party.
Gremlinz @ Atmosphere 04
WITH
ILLFINGAS, HYDRA, SIDENOTE, LINK, CLAY DAVIS.
FRI, APR 9.
NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $5.
This two-room Atmosphere event makes musical links between genres, with
DJs dropping everything from drum 'n' bass and dubstep to old-school
and experimental hip-hop. Headlining on the D&B front is local
DJ/producer Gremlinz, a man who has long been making waves locally and
in the UK, with releases on high-profile labels including Metalheadz
and Renegade Hardware. He's an ideal ambassador for T.O., and is able
to rinse it from brain-shattering breakbeats to more subtle, dub-tinged
tunes. Local Vinyl Syndicate legend Illfingas is also stepping with a
raft of new tunes up his sleeve so expect dubplates galore.
Synkro
WITH DJS LINK VS. SIDENOTE, JAWBONE VS
SUBHUMAN, SPYNE, LAZERBOY, BASILISK,
DAVEY BOOM, T-MINUS, HANS OHM, MC
ENLIGHT. FRI, FEB 5.
NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $10 BEFORE 11:30PM WITH
RSVP, $15 AFTER.
In just three years, Manchester's Joe
Synkro has released more than a dozen EPs of deep-bass music for labels
including Smokin Sessions, Dubbed Out and Mindset. His sound is far
from obvious; nodding to dubstep, D&B, house and soul, Synkro
creates an atmospheric, vocal-laced whole that demands headphone
listening as much as it commands the dancefloor. He's already had radio
support from the likes of Rinse FM and BBC Radio1 and makes his Toronto
debut, alongside members of the One Off, Dubslingers and Archi-textures
crews, at this two-room affair.

Tycho (Live)
WITH AARNIO, NOAH PRED. FRI, NOV 20. NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W.
$10 ADVANCE FROM FUNCTION13, WWW.THEGHOSTLYSTORE.COM; $15 DOOR.
As ISO50, San Fran's Scott Hansen creates striking illustrated print
works that have adorned surfaces including the downtempo, ambient and
IDM releases he's created under the pseudonym Tycho. Best known for his
two dreamy singles on Ghostly International, he'll perform a live set;
earlier that day, his ISO50 art show, dubbed Analog Vision, opens at
Function 13 Gallery (156 Augusta).
EYE WEEKLY
Philip Bader (Berlin) @ Nocturne
Best Bet for Oct 24, 2009
http://www.eyeweekly.com/clubs/bestbets/article/74848
Philip Bader
WITH DJS ALICIA HUSH, CHRIS LARSEN,
TALAL & ZOI, FALASTEEN. SAT, OCT 24. NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $15
BEFORE MIDNIGHT, $20 AFTER.
The women of HushLamb Productions
continue to make good on their commitment to booking forward-minded,
emerging house and techno talents by bringing Berlin's Philip Bader.
Though he's been DJing for the past decade, Bader stepped up on the
production front in 2005 and has released a handful of EPs and remixes
on labels including Electric Avenue, MIS, Kindisch and Get Physical.
Last year's "Mamba Drums," co-produced by Sascha Braemer, has a
haunting keyboard hook and killer beats that are both fantastic and
representative of Bader's gutsy, grooving and idiosyncratic take on
minimal.
EYE WEEKLY
Matteo Milleri (Milan) @ Nocturne
Best Bet for Oct 16, 2009
http://www.eyeweekly.com/clubs/bestbets/article/73999
Matteo Milleri
WITH DJS ADDY, JAMES TEEJ. FILTHY AFFAIR. FRI, OCT 16. NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $20.
Milan-based
producer Matteo Milleri is a relative newcomer who's got the tech-house
touch. At just 21 years old, Milleri has absorbed the best that his
native New York and deeper European comrades have to offer, producing
original pieces for labels such as Nummer Schalplatten and MyBestFriend
that show his fantastic ear for melodies, grooves and spot-on vocal
samples. His remix of Piemont's "Black Smoker" is one of the most
addictive tracks I've heard all year. Deep, throbbing and joyous, it's
set him up with supporters like Gregor Tresher and Karotte and the list
of enthusiasts is growing. Milleri is a raw talent who's soon to
explode.
EYE WEEKLY
Jamie Kidd (EP Release Party) @ Nocturne
Best Bet for Oct 9, 2009
Jamie Kidd @ Lascivious Prey EP Release
WITH NOAH PRED, ERIC DOWNER, JONNY WHITE. FRI, OCT 9.
NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $5.
Over
the past few years, Toronto musician and DJ/producer Jamie Kidd has
emerged as a musical powerhouse. He's played bass in numerous funk and
disco projects, performs and records as one half of industrious techno
act Metalogic and hits the sweet tech-house spot when DJing. The
Platform resident has also been steadily building a strong solo
discography, most notably with singles and remixes for Noah Pred's
Thoughtless Music. His debut solo EP, Lascivious Prey, is Kidd's
strongest work to date. Produced with strapping live bass and
imaginative, driving rhythms at its core, the EP being fêted here is
highly original and aptly titled.
EYE WEEKLY
DJ Maus @ Nocturne
Best Bet for Aug 21, 2009
DJ Maus
WITH NYMRA, NOAH PRED, MORE. FRI, AUG 21.
NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $5 BEFORE 11:30PM, $10 AFTER.
Montreal
DJ/producer Louise Gauvreau, a.k.a. Maus, first gained attention in the
late '90s as a d'n'b DJ. Intersections, her beautifully mixed CD from
2000, earned international press; since then, she's turned her talents
to tech and house, has DJed and promoted steadily and begun focusing on
production. Her recent, tech-leaning releases on Toronto's Thoughtless
label show her to be creative and versatile.
EYE WEEKLY
XI @ Nocturne (One Off)
Best Bet for Aug 7, 2009
http://www.eyeweekly.com/clubs/bestbets/article/68141
XI @ One Off
WITH DJS SIDENOTE, SARA SIMMS, CAPRO, AKM, SPYNE, PAUL REVERED. FRI, AUG 7. NOCTURNE, 550 QUEEN W. $5.
With
a focus on locals blending dubstep, deep-and-dubby techno and house, UK
funky and garage, One Off is actually a recurring party to keep an eye
out for. It'll be running in both rooms of new Queen West hot spot
Nocturne, with Scarborough DJ/producer Christian XI representing
mightily on the bass music front. First known in drum 'n' bass circles
and now for his dubstep experiments, XI's been making music for the
last decade, growing in scope as well as discography. I'm loving XI's
increasingly complex rhythms and his moody remix of Egyptrixx's "Just
Say Really."
